Hyderabad: Upcoming Odisha tennis player Avipsha Dehury achieved the biggest success of her career by clinching a double crown in the AITA National Series U-16 tournament at Sania Mirza Tennis Academy here on Saturday.
The Bhubaneswar girl, ranked No. 86 in India, overcame a meltdown in the second set to beat Tamil Nadu’s Bawyasri ASR 7-6 (7-3), 0-6, 6-2 in the girls’ singles final. It was Avipsha’s maiden National Series title triumph.
In the semifinals, Avipsha prevailed over another Tamil Nadu girl Sanmitha Lokesh 6-3, 6-1.
In the girls’ doubles final, Avipsha and Avyaktha Rayavarapu (Telangana) saw off Telangana-Tamil Nadu combination of Aditi Paturi and Tejaswi Manneni 6-2, 6-4.
Avipsha and Avyaktha had earlier breezed through their semifinal 6-1, 6-1 against Telangana opponents Zoha Qureshi and Savarnika Visanakarra.
A student of KIIT International School, Bhubaneswar, Avipsha trains at Farhan Ali Tennis Academy in Patia.
“Avipsha is a hard-working player and discipline is her forte. She has the ability to make a mark at the junior international circuit,” said coach Ali.
