Bhubaneswar: With sultry weather conditions prevailing in Odisha, Bhubaneswar recorded the highest day temperature of 38.6 degree Celsius by 11.30 am on Sunday.
According to the regional meteorological centre, the mercury soared to 38 degree Celsius or more at three more places in the state – Sambalpur (38.4), Jharsuguda (38.2) and Hirakud (38).
The state capital had recorded 33.6 degree Celsius by 8.30 am. The city had recorded 39.7 degree Celsius the previous day when mercury shot up to 42.9 degree Celsius in Boudh, followed by Jharsuguda at 42.6 degree Celsius.
The MeT office had said that the maximum temperature is likely to be 42°C or more at one or two places during next 24 hours and at a few places over some districts of interior Odisha – Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Kalahandi and Jharsuguda – during the subsequent period.
People have been advised to take precautionary measure while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm. There will be no large change in the day temperature during the next 5 days, it added.
Amid the sharp rise in the mercury level at some places, the government has confirmed the first sunstroke-related death of the season. The victim has been identified Jagabandhu Jena of Bhogarai (73) of Balasore district and he suffered a heat stroke on April 19.
Additional special relief commissioner Padmanabha Behera on Friday said the government paid ex-gratia to the victim’s family last week after the sunstroke death was confirmed following an inquiry.
