Bhubaneswar: A 55-year-old man was arrested by the police in Bhubaneswar for allegedly marrying four women with various promises and torturing them.
The man was arrested by the Mahila Police following a complaint lodged by his fourth wife. It was alleged that the man married four times while concealing the existence of his first wife, physically assaulting and confining his wife and minor daughter, and subjecting them to forced sexual misconduct.
Police investigation revealed that his second wife had previously died by suicide, while his third wife fled the home, unable to endure the abuse.
The complainant said she discovered that she was his fourth wife of the man only after becoming pregnant, approximately four years into their marriage. She also learned that the accused’s first wife was still alive, while his second wife had passed away, and his third wife was living separately.
Later, domestic discord arose after the accused entered into a relationship with another woman and brought her to live with them. Fed up with the accused’s acts of bigamy and his abusive behaviour, the complainant began to loathe him and started living separately.
However, on September 30, 2026, the accused suddenly entered the victim’s home and insisted on celebrating their daughter’s birthday. When the victim objected, the accused subjected her to verbal abuse using obscene language. When their minor daughter protested, the accused assaulted her and forcibly locked her inside a room. Subsequently, he engaged in non-consensual sexual misconduct with his wife, threatening her by claiming that reporting the matter to the police would yield no consequences.
Following a complaint filed by the woman, the police had her statement recorded in court—in accordance with Section 164 of the CrPC (Section 183 of the BNSS)—and conducted a medical examination. The police continued their investigation to apprehend the accused, who was absconding. On October 27, police successfully captured the accused during a raid in the Khandagiri area. After he confessed to his crime, he was formally arrested and produced before the court, with a request for a 15-day remand.
Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
