Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police may seek 3-day remand of the three men, including two burglars, arrested on Wednesday for the alleged gang rape of a 25-year-old woman at her residence in the city early Monday.
While one of the accused, Tukuna Nayak (27), is the woman’s neighbour, the other two – Bikash Naik (26), Jaga Singh (25)- earlier resided in the same locality.
The accused will produced in court around 2 pm on Thursday.
Besides further questioning, police may take them for crime scene creation. A Test Identification Parade (TIP) of the accused is also likely, sources said.
The crime took place around 2 am on September 30 in a multi-storey building of a housing colony in Bhubaneswar’s Maitri Vihar developed by the state government for slum dwellers. The woman, who recently separated from her husband, had reportedly moved into the flat about 10 days ago.
Bikash and Jaga entered her house on finding her balcony door open while the woman and her two-year-old daughter were sleeping. The duo gagged her when she found them stealing her mobile phone and a pair of earrings from a cupboard. Before fleeing with the valuables, they sexually assaulted the woman by holding her two-year-old daughter at knife point, police sources said.
Since there was not CCTV cameras in the building, identifying the culprits was a big challenge for the police.
Police sources further said that the burglars duo had stolen a mobile phone from her balcony on September 28, but the woman did not file a police complaint, assuming that she had misplaced her phone.
