The state capital had recorded the highest maximum temperature of 39 degree Celsius by 11.30 am while Jharsuguda logged 38.4 degree Celsius followed by Sambalpur at 38.2 degree Celsius.
With the state reeling under heatwave conditions, the day temperature is expected to touch 42 degree Celsius in some interior districts – Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Jharsuguda, Bargarh – during the next 5 days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The MeT office has also issued yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph in some districts till May 27. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain at most places across the state on all these days. The coastal belt is also witnessing a sudden drop in the mercury level late afternoon with sea-triggered cooler wind making the evenings pleasant after a sultry day. The IMD has attributed it to southerly wind and moisture in the environment in the evening.
