Bhubaneswar: Selling an old washing machine proved costly for a teacher of a private institute in the Odisha capital.
According to sources, the victim, identified a Reshma Mohapatra, had put up her washing machine for sale on online marketplace OLX.
A buyer approached her and agreed to pay Rs 9,500 for the washing machine. He initially transferred Rs 5 through Google Pay to her account to check whether she received the amount and ostensibly to win her trust. The woman also received two QR codes and was asked to scan it to receive the payment.
However, she soon found that Rs 19, 000 was deducted from her account in two transactions.
“A sum of Rs 9,500 was debited from my account after I scanned a code. When I questioned him, he said this happened because he had mistakenly sent a wrong QR code. He then sent me another code and asked me to follow the same procedure to receive the money. This time, I lost another Rs 9,500,” she told a local media.
Reshma has lodged a complaint in this connection with Infocity police. She has also sought help from Cyber help desk.
On Tuesday, Twin City Commissioner of Police (CP) Sudhanshu Sarangi had informed about Rs 1.4 crore cyber fraud in the last month. Bhubaneswar had reported a fraud of Rs 50 lakh fraud committed through 368 calls.
