Bhubaneswar: The denizens of Bhubaneswar sizzled in sweltering heat as the state capital on Tuesday recorded 43.7 degree Celsius, the highest temperature in Odisha recorded in the month of April this year.

So far, the highest temperature recorded in Bhubaneswar is 45.8 degrees Celsius on April 11, 2016, a senior official of the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar told Odisha Bytes.

The temperature rose sharply in the capital city after 9 am. By noon, the busy thoroughfare and market places in the city wore a deserted look as the sweltering heat accompanied by hot wind made the life of the people miserable.

Despite thunderstorm and lightning warning in Odisha till the next six days up to April 21 by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is no respite from the heat wave.

Explaining the sudden rise in the day temperature in the state, a mid-day weather bulletin by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar on Tuesday said that a trough line along the longitude 87° east to the north of latitude 24° north is formed at 2.1 km above mean sea level while another trough line runs from north Bihar to Mizoram across north West Bengal and Bangladesh at 0.9 km above mean sea level. This has resulted in the blockage of sea wind blowing towards the surface by hot, westerly winds from the north-west and central region of the country.

An evening release by the local Met office here said that apart from Bhubaneswar, the temperature shot up to 40 degrees and above at seven places – Chandbali (40.5), Cuttack (41.1), Angul (42.7), Jharsuguda (40), Talcher (43.3), Titlagarh (42) and Malkangiri (40.8).

Besides, the temperature remained close to 40 degrees in Balasore (38.4), Baripada (39.4), Keonjhar (38.3), Sambalpur (39.9), Sundargarh (39), Hirakud (39.1), Bhawanipatna (39.5) and Sonepur (39.2).
