New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Newly-elected Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi has sought central allocation and support to alleviate the problem of waterlogging in the Odisha capital.
“In the Lok Sabha today, I raised the issue of waterlogging in Bhubaneswar caused by one hour of rainfall. The need to allocate adequate resources and find technical solutions were emphasised for drainage management,” the MP wrote in a Twitter post on Tuesday. “We seriously need to alleviate recurring distress of residents,” she added.
Several areas in the ‘Smart City’ were inundated on Tuesday following incessant rain triggered by a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal in the past two days.
The commuters had a torrid time navigating the waterlogged national highway at Acharya Vihar, Jayadev Vihar, Rasulgarh and Palasuni Squares. Vehicular traffic was in a mess with rainwater rising till the waist level near the Iskcon temple at Nayapalli.
The highway near Iskcon temple remains submerged during heavy rains every year due to lack of proper outlet for the rainwater coming from the entire catchment of Nayapalli. Last year, four-wheelers were seen floating on the waterlogged stretch, following which the authorities had asked the NHAI to look for short-term and long-term measures to tide over the problem.
