A joint venture of GE Transportation, part of American company Wabtec, with Indian Railways for the production of 1000 high-power freight locomotives over a period of 10 years designed to run on Indian railway tracks.
Patna: The Marhowrah Diesel Locomotive Factory in Bihar is set go global.
The factory that has been manufacturing nearly 100 locomotives for Indian Railways every year, will soon be making locomotives for export.
The Marhowra plant, a joint venture of GE Transportation — part of American company Wabtec — and Indian Railways, was established in 2018 to manufacture 1,000 locomotives with state-of-the-art technology for Indian Railways indigenously.
Aligned with the Central government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Made for the World’ initiatives under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Marhowra factory will be targeting the first shipments for customers in Africa.
Covering 70 acres, the Marhowra plant employs nearly 600 people and has also stimulated industrial activity in the region. Around 650 locomotives have been manufactured and added to the Indian Railways fleet till date.
The successful public-private partnership between India’s Ministry of Railways and Wabtec has established Marhowra as a world-class manufacturing site.
The Marhowra plant will export standard-gauge locomotives, expand the local supplier network, and create long-term job opportunities, benefitting the Indian economy.
