Bhubaneswar: A bike-borne youth was critically injured after coming in contact with a manja (kite thread) on Tuesday evening.
The man, identified as Kamala Kanta of Bhubaneswar’s Kalpana area, was riding his two-wheeler on Pokhariput railway overbridge when a kite thread cut across his throat. Besides b
leeding from his throat, his fingers were also injured as he attempted to remove the thread.
His friends, who were travelling on another two-wheeler, came to his rescue and took him to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. Kamala Kanta was later referred to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack due to his serious condition.
Restrictions on kite flying are in place in Bhubaneswar, ahead of Wednesday’s Makar Sankranti. However, there have been violations as enthusiastic kite fliers look to evade the glare of cops.
The Commissionerate Police have conducted raids at various locations in the city. However, some unscrupulous traders are reportedly hoarding banned kite thread and selling it illegally.
