New Delhi: As West Bengal boils in the wake of the gruesome Birbhum arson, a delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday and demanded that West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar be removed.

They also wrote a letter to Shah, describing Dhankhar as a “threat to parliamentary democratic system”.

Opposition leaders have said that the incident, which resulted in women and children being burnt alive in their homes, was a revenge killing after a TMC district leader had been murdered on Monday.

“Dhankhar has become a threat to the parliamentary democratic system of the country. He is appearing in a manner that is totally hampering the federal structure of running the government and Constitution of the country,” the letter stated.

Dhankhar, who has been at loggerheads with the state government over various issues since taking charge in 2019, irked TMC with his comment on the Birbhum incident.

“Horrifying violence and arson orgy #Rampurhat #Birbhum indicates state is in grip of violence culture and lawlessness. Already eight lives lost,” Dhankhar tweeted.

TMC reiterated that the Governor was behaving like a “leader of the Opposition” in Bengal.

The MPs handed over to Shah a copy of chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s letter to Dhankhar on the issue, asserting that Bengal Police will not spare anyone who is guilty.
