Kendrapara: The annual bird census in Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district will begin from Wednesday.
According to Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Rajnagar Mangrove (Forest) and Wildlife Division Bimal Prasanna Acharya, two teams with five forest staff each will conduct the bird census. It will continue till September 26.
“Mostly, country birds like Kaparkhai, Anjana, Rani Baga, Panikua, Gendalia and Khaira from various parts of the country congregate at Bhitarkanika during the monsoon for breeding. These birds build nests in Guan, Bani and Kerua trees,” he said.
While identification of the nests is usually conducted in August, it has been delayed this year due to the delay in the nesting of this birds and shifting of their nesting to other parts of the trees. This led a to the delay in identifying their nests, the DFO added.
