Bhubaneswar: Following the confirmation of bird flu in 10 states, the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) in the city has sounded an alert against a possible outbreak.
However, the zoo authority has said no symptoms have been found among the birds till now
As a precautionary measure, the authority has closed the aviary of the zoo to visitors. It has also sent the samples of 65 birds for testing to the Animal Disease Research Institute at Phulnakhara in Cuttack.
According to zoo veterinary doctor Alok Das, bird flu symptoms have not yet been detected anywhere in Odisha.
Das informed that with the end of winter, it is customary for migratory birds to return to their native places. Many of these birds flying off from Chilika and Anshupa may visit the zoo en route to their destinations, he added.
Likewise, tourists from outside states can also have impact on the birds, said Das.
“However, flu season routine has already been started. We are spraying chlorine mixed water at the aviary of the zoo. We are also cleaning the entry points of birds with bleaching,” he added.
