Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Tuesday appointed three senior leaders as observers for Jharsuguda by-election, scheduled to be held on May 10.
“Prasanna Acharya, Devi Prasad Mishra and Sarada Prasad Nayak have been appointed as observers for the upcoming Jharsuguda bypoll with immediate effect,” an office order read.

The BJD has fielded Deepali Das as its candidate for the bypoll, which was necessitated following the death of her father and Health Minister of Odisha Naba Kishore Das, who fell to the bullets of an ASI at Brajarajnagar on January 29. The bypoll may also see Tankadhar Tripathy of BJP making his debut in the electoral politics.
Meanwhile, a 5-member committee of the Congress is now on a visit to Jharsuguda to pick the potential aspirants. It is a do or die situation for the party, which has lost deposits in 5 bypolls since 2019.
This by-election is expected to set the tone for the bigger battle in 2024.
