Jharsuguda: Chhattisgarh Police on Thursday arrested BJD leader and ex-MLA Anup Sai in connection with a double-murder case, which took place in 2016.
The former MLA was picked up from his house here the previous night by a police team and taken to Chakradhar Nagar police station in Raighar district for interrogation.
According to sources, police are trying to verify his alleged links in the murder of a woman, identified as Kalpana Das (32), and her daughter Pravati Das (14) in April 2016. The bodies were allegedly disposed off in Chhattisgarh.
Following investigation and interrogation of the deceased’s kin, Chhattisgarh Police had detained Sai and informed their Odisha counterpart about this development last night over a phone call. They further said that the former MLA had failed to appear before the police in the neighbouring state despite several notices issued to him.
.“I got a call from Raigarh SP and he informed me about detaining Anup Sai on a years old case. We have registered a station-diary at Gandhi Chhak outpost based on the information and have informed his family members about it,” said Jharsuguda SP Ashwini Mohanty,
Earlier speaking to a local news channel, Raigarh Addl SP Abhishek Verma had said that interrogation in connection with the murder case was still going on and Sai was most likely to be arrested soon.
A three-time MLA from Brajrajnagar assembly constituency, Sai had quit Congress and unsuccessfully represented the same constituency for BJD in 2014.
During 2019 elections, he was assigned the task of Campaign Committee Chairperson for Bijepur Assembly seat, which was contested by BJD president Naveen Patnaik.
In August 2019, he was appointed chairperson of the State Warehousing Corporation.
