Bhubaneswar: Muzibulla Khan, BJD MP in the Rajya Sabha, raised the issue of the proposed Legislative Council in Odisha on Thursday.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Khan said, “Our leader in the Rajya Sabha Prasanna Acharya even asked for an update on this, but he was informed by the government that it has not received any such proposal. After that the Speaker of the Odisha Assembly sent the ‘Resolution passed by the Assembly’ to the Centre. I urged the Centre to consider the state Assembly proposal.”
Last month, Odisha Assembly Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro requested Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju to order a departmental inquiry into how officials in his ministry gave him incorrect information about Odisha’s proposal to set up a Vidhan Parishad.
“I have written to Rijiju, mentioning that the Odisha Assembly on September 18, 2018, adopted a resolution for creating a Legislative Council in the state and the same was communicated to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Union Parliamentary Affairs Ministry and Union Law and Justice Ministry,” Patro had told Odisha Bytes then.
The Odisha Speaker’s response came after the Union Minister told the Rajya Sabha that as per records, no resolution had been received to create Legislative Council in Odisha. Rijiju stated this while giving a written reply to a question from BJD MP Acharya.
