Cuttack: A day after Orissa High Court rejected Cuttack’s Balu Bazar Puja Committee plea for relaxation in capping Durga idol height at 4 feet, BJD leader and Rajya Sabha member Subash Singh on Saturday accused his party colleague and Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab of politicising the issue.
Talking to the media, Singh said the state government decided on imposing restrictions on the height of the idol and behind-the-curtain rituals to avoid a large congregation of the people in view of the COVID pandemic.
Welcoming the verdict of the High Court, which refused to interfere with August 9 festival guidelines, he said that the statement of Bhartruhari on the height of the idol at this juncture made the issue more complex.
Singh advised the Cuttack MP to refrain from politicising the issue and creating differences between puja committees and the state government.
The claim by Bhartruhari that limiting the height of the idol is a gross violation of the centuries-old rituals is not justified, he added.
