Bhubaneswar: The opposition parties have moved an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, accusing him of misbehaviour and misusing his authority.
The BJD government, however, has declared that it will not support the motion.
“Impeachment notice against the CJI should be given on rare occasion. There is no point in demeaning the post of the CJI,” BJD spokesman Amar Prasad Satpathy said.
In March, the regional party had categorically stated that it was not in favour of an impeachment motion against the CJI and dismissed rumours on social media in this regard.
Leveling five specific allegations, opposition parties led by the Congress on Friday met Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu and handed over a notice for the impeachment of CJI.
The notice has been signed by 60 lawmakers belonging to Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Left parties Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Communist Party of India (CPI), Samajwadi Party (SP), and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Among those who have signed the notice are seven former MPs, who recently retired.
Misra is 45th CJI of India. He hails from Cuttack, Odisha.
