Bhubaneswar: A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met Odisha Governor Raghubar Das on Thursday and sought his intervention for mitigating the plight of the farming community in the state.
The team, led by state BJP’s Krushak Morcha president Maheswar Sahu, submitted a memorandum to the Governor drawing his attention to reports of farmer suicides in the state.
The saffron party leaders claimed that the state reported suicide by three farmers in one month due to crop loss. Claiming that three suicide incidents were reported from Jajpur, Nayagarh and Balangir districts, they held the state government responsible.
The leaders alleged that the state government has failed to provide proper irrigation facilities to the farmers during its 23-year-long rule. Due to the lack of irrigation facilities and deficit rainfall, the farmers in several areas are facing drought-like situation.
This apart, farmers are forced to resort to distress sale as the government is yet to open paddy procurement centres, the BJP leaders claimed.
Demanding immediate steps to ensure justice for farmers, the BJP leaders presented a six-point charter of demands to the Governor and sought his intervention for putting an end to the miseries of the farming community in the state.
