Bhubaneswar: The candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sujeet Kumar, has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha, the Odisha Assembly said in a statement on Friday.
Kumar had filed his nomination papers for the lone vacant Rajya Sabha seat from the state on December 9. He was declared elected as no one else had filed nomination for the seat.
Kumar was elected to the Upper House as a Biju Janata Dal (BJD) nominee in 2020, But he quit his seat and resigned from the BJD in September. Later, he joined the BJP which nominated him for the Rajya Sabha.
The election to the seat was scheduled to be held on December 20 as per the notification.
It may be noted that before Kumar, another BJD member of Rajya Sabha, Mamata Mohanta, had resigned from the party and joined the saffron party. She was also re-elected to the Rajya Sabha as BJP nominee.
