Kolkata: Kolkata Police arrested BJP leader and actress Roopa Ganguly on Thursday following her overnight protest over the death of a student who was crushed by an earth-mover JCB machine.

Roopa alleged that she was neither allowed to use the washroom nor permitted to collect her belongings before being taken to the police vehicle.

The former Rajya Sabha MP, who played Draupadi in B R Chopra’s hit TV series Mahabharat in the late 1980s, had sat on a dharna outside Bansdroni Police Station on Wednesday night along with other party leaders and workers to protest the student’s death.

Roopa had said that she would continue to sit there till those people involved in the tragedy were arrested. But police picked her up saying that she disrupted their work.

Roopa claimed she had done nothing to warrant an arrest.

A class IX student was on way to his coaching centre when he was hit by a JCB on Wednesday morning.

The student suffered a serious head injury and later passed away.

Local residents staged a protest, gheraoing OCs of three police stations and complaining that Anita Kar Majumdar, the councillor of Ward No. 113, where the mishap took place, was missing from the scene.

BJP leader Ruby Mondal and other party workers were arrested for their protests.

Roopa alleged that none of the accused involved in the student’s death was arrested while Ruby was apprehended without any complaint.
