New Delhi: BJP’s MP from Kota Om Birla was on Wednesday unanimously elected as the Speaker of Lok Sabha.
The Naveen Patnaik-led BJD and Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress were among the non-NDA allies who backed his candidature after the NDA announced Birla’s name for the Speaker’s post on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved a motion for the election of Birla, describing him as a pioneer who had transformed Kota in Rajasthan into an educational hub. The motion was passed by voice vote.
BJD’s Lok Sabha members Pinaki Mishra and Achyuta Samanta supported the motion.
