Bhubaneswar: The BJP on Sunday named Suryabanshi Suraj, son of former MLA Bishnu Charan Sethi, as its candidate for the by-election to Dhamnagar Assembly constituency.
According to reports, there was consensus over Suraj in the saffron party since he was looking after the constituency with Bishnu Sethi not keeping well for most of the time and he had become a familiar face with the constituents. He also will be able to garner the sympathy of voters.
BJD and Congress are yet to announce their candidates. While there are many aspirants for the BJD ticket, Rajendra Das, who lost the 2019 election to Sethi by a slender margin, is stated to be the favourite of the party. Several veteran leaders like Ananta Sethi to Harekrushna Sethi, Bidyadhar Jena and Panchanan Mandal are said to be frontrunners in the Congress.
