Dhenkanal: The BJP activists staged a road blockade, protesting against illegal sand mining, at Parjang in Dhenkanal district on Tuesday morning.
“We demand immediate closure of illegal sand quarries functioning at several places, including Damal, Kamar, Kulei and Jatia under Parjang block in the district. Illegal mining is being carried out for quite a long time, but the district officials have done little to stop it,” a party leader said.
Later, a party delegation submitted a memorandum to the district collector, seeking closure of the sand quarries and immediate action against those involved in the unlawful activity in the area.
Owing to the blockade, hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on either side of the road at Parjang for more than two hours. The blockade was lifted after local Tehsildar reached the spot and promised the agitators of appropriate steps.
