Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of BJP activists staged Jala Satyagraha at Bindusagar here for an hour demanding immediate restoration of the lake.
The protest, which began at 10 am, saw party state vice-president Sameer Mohanty and other members stepping into the water body holding placards and banners.
“The BJD-led state government has failed to restore the water quality of the lake despite the Centre releasing funds for the purpose in 2004. Maintenance of the water body has become a matter of concern as Bindusagar is one of the holy lakes in the city,” Mohanty said.
A Pune-based firm was given the task to clean the water body. However, the Rs 3.5-crore project was left half-finished for reasons best known to Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state government, he said.
The government must take appropriate steps to rid the water body of pollutants, he added.
