Nayagarh: The workers of Odisha unit of BJP led by the party candidate for Nayagarh Assembly constituency Pratyusha Rajeshwari Singh on Friday gheraoed Odagaon police station in protest against police inaction in a rape case.
Singh along with hundreds of BJP workers staged a road blockade in the town demanding justice for the rape survivor. They alleged that the police were deliberately dragging their feet in taking action against the accused, who is the husband of a sarpanch. Though a complaint has been filed by the victim’s family, no step has been taken against the accused till date, they alleged.
Later, they took out a rally raising slogans for justice to the rape survivor and gheraoed the police station. As they tried to force their way into the police station, they were resisted by the personnel. It led to a scuffle between the BJP workers and the police.
Speaking to the media, Singh said it was a case of crime against women. “The police have remained silent while the perpetrator of the crime goes scot-free. As injustice to victims of the crime cannot be tolerated, we decided to gherao the police station,” the BJP leader said.
However, Sarankul Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sudhakar Sahu refuted the allegations as baseless. The investigation into the complaint was going on and necessary action would be taken against the accused, he said.
