Bhubaneswar: Fire Services DG, Bijay Kumar Sharma will assume charge as Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) picked the senior 1986-batch IPS officer for the post after the incumbent DGP Dr RP Sharma went on leave following the untimely demise of his wife, Tushar Sharma, at Gangaram Hospital in New Delhi early on Sunday.
Bijay Sharma had earlier served as Director General of Prisons and was appointed Fire Services and Home Guard DG in 2017.
The ECI had to step in since Odisha will go to on April 11.
With first-phase polls just three days away, the state police have intensified deployment of forces at polling booths in Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Berhampur and Koraput Lok Sabha constituencies and the Assembly constituencies falling under them to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
