Puri: A portion of the roof of the Balanga Police Station in Puri district was blown away following a blast in the lock-up cell (malkhana) late on Monday night.
According to sources, the incident took place at about 12 am when there was a blast in the lock-up room. The intensity of the blast was so severe that a portion of the roof of the police station was blown away while all assets including all files and electronic equipment were completely damaged.
However, Saroj Behera, a sentry, who was on night duty, had a narrow escape as he immediately ran away from the police station after hearing the blast.
Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh rushed to the police station on Tuesday for an on-the-spot investigation.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that the police had seized the explosive articles recently and kept them in the lock-up cell.
