Jagatsinghpur: A youth, caught in a theft case, was allegedly tortured in police custody in Sadar block of Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district.
The youth, identified as Rashmi Ranjan Mallick of Taradapada village, revealed his ordeal before media persons on Sunday.
Police picked up the youth on March 4 midnight in connection with a theft case. Following which, he was physically and mentally tortured for three days in the lock up. Later, his family members along with scores of villagers staged a sit-in protest in front of the police station seeking his immediate release, sources said.
Buckling under the public pressure, the police set him free.
Showing the injuries inflicted in the lock up, Rashmi alleged that two sub-inspectors and a constable brutally thrashed him even though he was not involved in the theft case.
Local people and the kin of his family have demanded stern action against the police personnel. His family members further said that that they written to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the DGP, the SP and the SDPO in this regard.
Police, however, refused to comment on the matter.
