Puri: The Snake Helpline has suggested use physical barriers instead of chemicals to ward off snakes from the Blue Flag Beach here.
With snakes spotted at different spots on the beach from time to time, the authorities were concerned abut the safety of the tourists as well as the slithers. Around 15 days back, they had to face a tough time to rescue a cobra from a ladies’ toilet on the beach.
Apprehending the spread of scare among the visitors, the Blue Flag Beach manager Santosh Pilli roped in the Snake Helpline to make a survey and submit a report on remedial measures.
A four-member team of the Snake Helpline carried out a detailed survey of the beach. They submitted their report to Pilli on Thursday.
In its report, the Snake Helpline has mentioned the reasons of frequent visit of the snakes to the beach and its solution. It has advised the authorities to refrain from using chemicals as a repellant since it can be harmful for both the tourists as well as snakes.
Snake Helpline general secretary Subhendu Mallick said physical barriers can be very effective to prevent the reptiles from entering the areas of human activities. Besides, those can be installed at a very low cost, he added.
