Bhubaneswar: With temperature in state capital hovering around 32-36°C, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a heatwave advisory, halting all outdoor construction activities between 11 am and 3 pm starting March 15.
This restriction targets peak afternoon hours to minimise heat exposure risks for labourers, as mercury levels continue to climb, according to civic officials.
The measures extend beyond work-hour curbs.
The BMC plans to establish drinking water kiosks at strategic public spots to aid commuter
s, street vendors, the homeless, and other vulnerable groups spending extended time outdoors. Additionally, water pots will be placed across the city for stray animals to ensure they have access to hydration during the extreme conditions.“The measures are intended to provide immediate relief during extreme heat conditions, particularly for people commuting, street vendors, homeless and vulnerable groups who spend long hours outdoors,” said BMC Deputy Commissioner Ratnakar Sahoo.
To strengthen coordination, the BMC has activated a 24×7 control room for managing heatwave responses.
In a related initiative, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) is reactivating the toll-free helpline 1929, previously used during the COVID-19 pandemic, for heat-related issues. Callers can seek medical guidance for sunstroke, report distress cases due to heat exposure, request help, or obtain advice on preventive steps and dos and don’ts.
