BMC Stops Dumping Waste From Bhubaneswar At Daruthenga; To Start Bio-Mining

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stoped dumping of garbage and waste generated from different parts of Odisha capital at Daruthenga from today.

At the same time, the civic body will go ahead with its proposal to set up a bio-mining facility at the site. A letter in this regard has been sent to Daruthenga Sarpanch, sources said.

The BMC will stop transportation of garbage to Bhuasuni site with effect from Wednesday as against the deadline of May 31, 2023. The deadline was fixed at a meeting held on August 30, 2022 under the chairmanship of Housing and Urban Development Minister regarding “Action Plan for Minimisation of Transportation of Waste to Bhuasuni.”

According to BMC Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange, the civic body will start the bio-mining of legacy waste at dump site in order to reclaim the land to its original position in a scientific manner for the benefit of the local residents.

The BMC is processing waste through a decentralised manner which is also called micro-compost centre, he said, adding that other scientific measures are also being explored.

He said the BMC has followed the set timeline of stopping the dumping of waste at Daruthenga.

A plan has been worked out keeping in view the time for processing and other aspects. For bio-mining project, special  machines and equipment are being deployed, while tender process has also been initiated, Kulange said.

The civic body also wants the local residents of Daruthenga to extend necessary cooperation for movement and installation of machineries at the site immediately.
