Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will take around seven more months to clear the garbage dump which has been spreading a foul smell near Sainik School in Odisha capital.
Local residents will have to bear with the stinking odour for some more time as the civic body will take another six to seven months to remove it, BMC Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange said on Saturday.
Stating that the civic body has decided to clear the entire garbage hill near Sainik School in six to seven months, he said one machine has been procured as the volume of garbage is huge, while another machine will be brought in the next 15 days.
He further said that those handling garbage clearance are facing problem because of non-segregation of waste at household points. Stressing the need for separating dry and wet garbage, Kulange said action will be taken for non-segregation of waste at door-to-door collection points.
All citizens should hand over waste after segregating to the waste collection vehicles, Kulange said, adding action will be taken against the violators.
It may be noted here that the residents of the area are facing a lot of problem due to the foul odour emanating from the Temporary Transit Centre (TTC) near Sainik School.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a demonstration in the state capital on Saturday demanding immediate steps by the BMC to resolve the issue.
Accusing the BMC of being ‘callous’ towards the issue, senior BJP leader Babu Singh said a team of BJP had visited the site and found that the garbage hill is creating health hazard for locals.
It is unfortunate that the BMC wants to take seven more months to remove the garbage, he said.
