Bhubaneswar: On the direction of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the BMC has decided to sign an agreement with two private companies for bio-mining work in the city’s garbage dump yard at Daruthenga.

According sources in Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Rs 100-crore project, which was approved by the state Cabinet last month, will be started in January next year after the two companies submit the security amount of Rs 3 crore.

“As part of the bio-mining, the two private forms will segregate the waste materials and process those at the dump yard. While the household waste will be processed for producing on-site compost, the hard materials such as metals and plastic will be sent for recycling,” TOI quoted BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation) Suvendu Sahu as saying.

After the NGT asked the civic bodies to clear the old waste, the Centre had issued similar direction.

It may be noted that the BMC has decided to shift the dump yard from Daruthenga, where it has been dumping the waste since 2018, after strong protests by the locals.
