Bhubaneswar: As Odisha capital encountered severe water logging following heavy downpour, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to strictly enforce the housing norms to tackle the problem witnessed during monsoon.

Building plan will not be approved for a house if there is no special place for drains and roads, according to BMC Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange.

Similarly, strict action will be taken against owners if they are found using their houses for purposes  other than the reason for which it was constructed, he said, adding that strictest action will be taken against people violating the rules.

This apart, a water harvesting project is mandatory in houses made over 300 square meters area. For an area of 20,000 square meters or more, the house owners are required to have their own sewage treatment plant, he said.

Similarly, strict action will be taken in case of violation of pre-approved plans of houses, apartments, educational institutions, commercial establishments, and industrial establishments located within the BMC limits.

Stating that major issues before the civic body include parking, sewage, and liquid waste management, the BMC commissioner said pre-approved plans for the construction of houses are not being followed properly. There are cases of parking violations also.

The BMC held a meeting in this regard yesterday and people are requested to see if they have violated any rules. They will be given a month’s time to rectify the violations and if they fail to do so, strong action will be taken, he added.
