Berhampur: The body of Odisha’s veteran CPM leader Jagannath Mishra has been donated to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur as per his wish.
Following the death of 73-year-old Communist leader on Sunday, his body was handed over to the Department of Anatomy in the medical college in presence of hundreds of CPM workers and leaders of different political parties on Monday.
Prof Suchitra Das, Principal of the medical college and Prof J Sagar Prusty, Head of the Department of Anatomy received the body. Mishra had donated his eyes earlier. The dead body was donated for dissection and research purposes, Prof Prusty said.
This is the 30th body donated by family members to the MKCG Hospital after the state Assembly passed the Odisha Anatomy (Amendment) Bill, 2012, Prof Prusty said. The body of CPM leader Ram Chandra Nayak was donated to the MKCG Hospital 13 years ago as the first body.
Mishra was a bachelor and resident of 3rd Tota Sahi of Gosaninuagaon in the city. He had been suffering from kidney ailments for the last one year. He was a renowned farmer’s leader.
Ali Kishore Patnaik, member of CPM Central Committee wrapped the red flag of the party over his body and veteran leaders including Suresh Panigrahi, Janardan Pati, BJD leader and Berhampur mayor Sanghamitra Dalei, environmentalist Prafulla Samantara and others laid flowers on the body before it was handed over, according to Judhistir Behera, secretary of CPM’s Ganjam unit.
