Cuttack: The body of a theft accused, who had escaped from police custody and jumped into Mahanadi, was recovered from the river near Jobra barrage in Odisha’s Cuttack on Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Sankarshan Behera alias Bablu, had escaped from the custody of Cantonment police on Friday.
After the body was fished out of the river, his family members were informed. They identified the body as that of Bablu.
According to soruces, Bablu was brought to the police station in connection with a theft case. During interrogation, he shoved some police personnel and ran away on Friday.
Family members alleged that the police had picked up Bablu three days ago though he was not involved in any crime. He was lodged at Bidanasi Police Station and then shifted to Cantonment Police Station. They further alleged that Bablu escaped from their custody because of torture.
A police official said an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the circumstances in which the accused escaped from custody. Appropriate action will be taken based upon the findings in the probe.
