New Delhi: Bollywood veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan on Friday filed a suit in the Delhi High Court, seeking an omnibus order protecting his name, image, voice or any of his characteristics.
According to the news agency ANI, eminent lawyer Harish Salve appeared for the megastar.
The court, while hearing the actor’s petition “against the world at large” on Friday, passed an interim order restraining people at large from infringing his personality and publicity rights.
In the order, Justice Navin Chawla said, “It cannot seriously be disputed that the plaintiff is a well-known personality and is also represented in various advertisements. The plaintiff is aggrieved by the defendants using his celebrity status to promote their own goods and services without his permission or authorization. Having considered the plaint, I am of the opinion that a prima facie case is made out and balance of convenience also lies in his favour.”
The judge also noted that the actor is likely to suffer irreparable loss and harm due to such activities, which may even bring him disrepute.
The high court also issued directions to the telecom service providers and authorities on the prayers made in the lawsuit.
It is pertinent to mention here that some advertisements with the veteran actor’s face led him to file the suit.
Salve stated that someone is making t-shirts and putting Amitabh Bachchan’s face on them, while others are selling his posters, while one has registered a domain name ‘amitabhbachchan.com’.
His name, image, and voice were also being used by mobile application developers to conduct lotteries by illegally associating with Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), a show hosted by the veteran actor.
