Mumbai: A song of the movie ‘Khaali Peeli’, starring Ananya Pandey and Ishaan Khatter, ‘Beyonce Sharma Jayegi’ was released on Monday.
It, however, has been receiving a lot of flak ever since it hit social media.
So, what went wrong? Let’s decode.
HuffPost India’s was quick to point out that Indian are apologizing on Khaali Peeli’s behalf for the racism the song depicts with words like ‘goriya, patli kamar’. It wrote, “Apparently Khali Peeli’s makers think using ‘gori’ to compare a thin, fair-skinned actor’s dancing skills to Beyoncé is a perfectly fine thing to do.”
Racism is a sensitive issue, especially now when America is standing against it with the #BlackLivesMatter campaign. The song hurts the sensitivity with insensitive lyrics. Here is a tweet from a twitter user, @moviesadmirer
Beyonce has made name for herself. The American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, actress, and filmmaker has numerous accolades to her name. Netizens are furious for comparing Ananya with her, who is a newbie, plus amid the nepotism debate.
Moreover, netizens are furious because Indian stars, including Vishal Dadlani, the singer of the song, supported #BlackLivesMatter campaign, and are not standing against Bollywood when they do something wrong. Check a tweet by the singer in support of the campaign.
