Mumbai: Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan passed away in Mumbai late on Thursday following a cardiac arrest. She was 71.
Family sources said she was admitted to Mumbai’s Guru Nanak Hospital last month after she complained of trouble in breathing. The legendary choreographer had severe diabetes and related illness and had tested negative for COVID-19.
Saroj Khan is survived by her husband B. Sohanlal, son Hamid Khan and daughters Hina Khan and Sukyna Khan.
Born as Nirmala Nagpal in 1948, Saroj Khan started her career as a child artiste at the age of 3. She played the younger Shyama in Nazarana. She then graduated to a back-up dancer in the 1950s and assisted choreographer B Sohanlal before making her debut as a dance director in ‘Geeta Mera Naam’ in 1974.
Her career touched new heights while working with Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit in the 80s and 90s. She will always be remembered for her signature hook steps in movies like Mr India (1987), Nagina (1986), Chandni (1989), Tezaab (1988), and Thanedaar (1990).
She choreographed Madhuri again in the song ‘Tabaah Ho Gaye’ from the film ‘Kalank’ released in 2019. This was her last film.
