Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep anguish over the death of a labourer in the collapse of a portion of the under-construction flyover at Bomikhal on Thursday.
The Chief Minister conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kin of the deceased.
Stating that the treatment cost of the injured will be borne by the state government, Naveen ordered a high-level inquiry into this tragic incident.
Meanwhile, police have arrested the owner of the construction firm Panda Infra Projects, Pratap Kishore Panda.
BJP leader Dharmendra Pradhan and Congress leader Narsingha Mishra have attributed the incident to the failure of the ruling BJD government.
Among the eight labourers engaged in the construction work, two were trapped behind an iron railing and sustained serious injuries.
One labourer was immediately rescued by locals, while it took an hour to free the other. The duo were rushed to the Capital Hospital in critical condition.
Ajay Bhumich (38), a native of Lathikata in Sundargarh district died while undergoing treatment. The injured, identified as Anand Nayak, was later shifted to a private hospital, sources said.
The mishap reportedly took after centering of the flyover collapsed.
