Speaking to media persons on Friday, Prof Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra, superintendent of the SCB Medical said all the processes for opening the bone bank in Orthopaedic department have reached final stage.
“While the procedure of cross-matching for bone transplantation has been going on, the tenders have been floated for procuring necessary equipment for the bank. The place for conservation of the bones in Orthopaedic department has also been finalised. We hope all the works will be completed within 3 months and the bone bank will start functioning,” Prof Mishra said.
Elaborating on the functions of the bone bank, he said normally the bones of the patients undergoing operation in the Orthopaedic department are thrown away after the surgery. Now, the discarded bones would be preserved in deep freezer so that those can be transplanted on other patients as per requirement, he added.
He further said this facility would be helpful particularly for the patients suffering from bone tumor. While there are bone banks in the hospitals outside Odisha, it will be opened for the first time in the state in SCB Medical.
