Dokra antelope set PM Modi gifted Slovakia Prez

New Delhi: Whenever Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels abroad on state visits, he makes it a point to take well-thought gifts for foreign leaders.

His recent visit to Slovakia and France was no different.

This time, the Indian PM selected his gifts from a range of traditional artworks, handwoven textiles, tribal handicrafts and classical Ayurvedic texts, reflecting India’s heritage and craftsmanship.

For Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini, PM Modi chose a Brass Dokra Antelope set that showcases India’s ancient Dokra metal-casting tradition practised for centuries by tribal artisans of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.

President Pellegrini was also gifted Thewa motif cufflinks from Rajasthan, a Himroo silk tie and pocket square set from Aurangabad.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico received a Kashmiri hand-knotted silk carpet, while Slovak Parliament Speaker Richard Raši was presented Thekua, a traditional sweet associated with Chhath festival in Bihar and Jharkhand, and also copies of Sushruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita, two foundational texts of Ayurveda.

As for French President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi presented a handcrafted Kalamkari painting from Andhra Pradesh depicting scenes from Mahabharata.

Modi picked a Pochampally silk stole from Telangana for France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron.
