Balangir: A ‘Nikaah’ was called off in Odisha’s Balangir district after the groom allegedly demanded a two-wheeler as dowry on the wedding day.
The groom, identified as Md Shaikh Qureshi from Burla in Sambalpur district, was detained by Balangir police on the basis of a complaint lodged by the bride’s family, who has also demanded reimbursement of Rs 5 lakh spent on the wedding feast and other arrangements.
According to sources, Qureshi’s had not made any demands for dowry prior to the wedding. His family did not eat the dinner served to them on Thursday when the bride’s family refused to fulfil the sudden demand for a two-wheeler. As Qureshi remained adamant on his demand, the family of the bride cancelled the wedding and lodged a complaint with Town Police.
Police picked up Qureshi and his family and detained them at the police station overnight for questioning. Further probe is on.
