Balangir: A girl’s family cancelled her marriage as some members of groom’s baraat (marriage procession) attacked the bride’s family in inebriated condition in Odisha’s Balangir.
As per reports, the girl’s family had arranged the marriage with a young boy belonging to Kukurbeda in Raipur of Chhattisgarh. As per the marriage programme, the baraat came to the bride’s family at Muribahal village under Turekela in Balangir district late Friday night.
While the baraatis including the groom’s family members were dancing during the procession in Muribahal, the bride’s brother also joined them. During the dance, the baraatis pushed him. After he fell down, there was an altercation between him and the baraatis.
As the bride’s father and another member of her family went to pacify the baraatis, things worsened and the argument escalated into pushing and shoving by the baraatis. Some members of the baraatis brought out knives and attacked the bride’s brother, father and others.
The bride’s brother who was stabbed on eye and others injured in the incident were rushed to the hospital. Later, the bride’s brother was shifted to a hospital in Raipur as his condition deteriorated.
Following the incident, the bride’s family cancelled the marriage. Speaking to media, the bride’s father Belakham Tandi said, “We welcomes the baraatis with all possible courtesy and hospitality. We even served snacks before the start of the procession. I cancelled the marriage fearing how my daughter would be treated in her in-law’s house after marriage.”
Meanwhile, police have registered a case after Belakham lodged a complaint regarding the incident. They have also detained two members of the baraat and were questioning them, police sources said.
