London: Less than 18 months into his reign, Britain’s King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer.
Buckingham Palace, in a statement, said that the the 75-year-old monarch has started treatment and remains “wholly positive”. He would temporarily step back from public engagements but will continue with state business, and won’t be handing over his constitutional roles as head of state.
While the palace has not specified the form of cancer, a royal source clarified that it is not related to the king’s recent treatment for a benign prostate condition when he was hospitalised for three nights last month.
Charles became king upon the death of his 96-year-old mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022. His official coronation took place on May 6, 2023.
Amid this diagnosis, Prince Harry is planning to head back to Britain to visit his father Charles III, the Press Association news agency reported.
