Baripada: Superstition over sorcery practice has raised its ugly head again in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
A woman, Khairi Mahanata of Sarisua village under Sarat police limits in the district was hacked to death by two brothers suspecting her of practicing sorcery.
The two accused have been identified as Kalia and Balia Mohanty of the village. They have absconded after the incident.
As per sources, the woman had gone to fetch water from a tube-well near her house when the two brothers followed her and on finding her alone, attacked Khairi on the head with a sharp weapon, killing her on the spot.
As per reports, Kalia was childless even after 10 years of marriage and he suspected Khairi of practicing black magic on him.
A team of police officials from Sarat reached the village and investigation is on.
The Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) has also reached the spot on Wednesday and expedited the investigation.
In August, a woman was allegedly attacked in Totasahi village under Kaptipada police limits of Mayurbhanj district over suspicion of practising sorcery. She survived the attack and later lodged a complaint.
