Balasore: In a major haul of narcotics, Excise officials have seized brown sugar weighing more than 2 kg from the residence of a drug smuggler in Odisha’s Balasore district on Sunday.
Speaking to media persons on the seizure, Sushant Padhi, Excise officer, Balasore said they received reliable information that a huge amount of brown sugar was going to be transported from a house at Arad Bazaar in the town.
A team of 15 Excise officials along with local police conducted raid on the house of Amjad Jhan and Sabir Khan in the locality. During the raid, they found brown sugar weighing more than 2 kg and seized. The cost of the seized brown sugar was estimated to be Rs 2 crore.
The team arrested Amjad Khan from the house while Sabir managed to escape on their arrival. The police also seized Rs 5,570 in cash and a mobile phone from the house.
The two smugglers were procuring the brown sugar from Madhya Pradesh and selling it in different places of Balasore and outside districts, sources said.
Padhi said they had registered a case against Amjad and were questioning him about involvement of any other person in the racket.
