Bhubaneswar: Continuing its drive against narcotic smuggling, the Commissionerate Police on Sunday seized brown sugar worth more than Rs 50 lakh in the city and arrested two persons in this connection.
According to police sources, the brown sugar smuggling from Balasore through Bhubaneswar was on the radar of the Commissionerate Police for some time.
Acting on reliable information that there was going to be a deal, Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police and Tamando Police conducted a raid on a place near Patasani Dhaba in Tomando area on the outskirts of the city.
They nabbed Sk Nasimuddian of Jaleswar in Balasore district and Chittaranjan Routray of Bhubaneswar and seized 520 gram of brown sugar from their possession. The market value of the seized contraband was estimated to be Rs 50 lakh, the sources said.
The police also seized Rs 13400 in cash, two motorcycles and four mobile phones from the accused. The seized brown sugar was procured from Balasore, the arrested duo admitted to police and said they were involved in its smuggling for the last few months. A case has been registered at Tomando police station.
