Bhubaneswar: In a surprise raid, a joint team comprising Excise officials and the flying squad of Commissionerate Police raided slum areas in Bhubaneswar and seized brown sugar worth Rs 38 lakh and arrested three persons.
Acting on a tip-off, the team raided the slums at Haladipadia and Chintamaniswar in Laxmisagar and seized 350 grams of brown sugar estimated at Rs 38 lakh and arrested a woman, her daughter and her would-be son-in-law.
As informed by the Excise officials, the accused used to bring the brown sugar directly from Howrah and sell those in small packets with each priced at Rs 500.
It may be mentioned here that the Excise team had seized brown sugar from Bhubaneswar on seven occasions in 2018.
